Preparing Your Child for Their First Day at Childcare

Starting childcare is a significant milestone for both children and parents. At Foxdale Kindergarten in Ingleburn, we understand that the first day can bring a mix of excitement and anxiety for families. With over 20 years of experience since opening in 2003, we have supported countless families through this important transition. Here is our comprehensive guide to preparing your child for their first day at childcare, ensuring a smooth and positive start to their early learning journey.

Start the Conversation Early

Begin talking to your child about childcare several weeks before their first day. Keep the conversation positive and age appropriate, focusing on the fun activities they will enjoy and the new friends they will make. At Foxdale Kindergarten, our play based learning environment offers exciting experiences that children naturally look forward to, from our STEM activities to our creative play areas.

Read books about starting childcare together and discuss what your child might see and do. Answer their questions honestly and reassure them that their feelings are normal. If your child will be attending our babies and toddlers room, even young children benefit from hearing about their new routine in a calm, positive voice.

Book a Centre Tour

Visiting Foxdale Kindergarten before your child’s first day is essential. Our cosy centre, which caters for 27 children daily, provides a welcoming home-like environment that helps children feel comfortable from the moment they arrive. During your tour, your child can explore the learning rooms, meet some of our early childhood educators, and become familiar with the space where they will spend their days.

Allow your child to ask questions and explore at their own pace. Point out interesting toys, the outdoor play area, and other features that might excite them. This familiarity reduces anxiety and builds anticipation for their first day.

Establish Consistent Routines at Home

Children thrive on predictability and routine. In the weeks leading up to their first day, establish consistent morning and bedtime routines that mirror the schedule they will follow at childcare. Foxdale Kindergarten operates Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm, so practice waking up at the appropriate time and following a morning routine that includes getting dressed, eating breakfast, and preparing their bag.

Encourage your child to practise self help skills such as washing their hands, putting on their shoes, and eating independently. These skills build confidence and help children feel more capable in their new environment. Our curriculum is designed by our early childhood educators to support children’s developmental milestones, and we work with each child at their individual level.

Discuss What to Expect During the Day

Talk your child through what a typical day at Foxdale Kindergarten looks like. Explain that they will have morning tea and lunch, which are nutritionally approved meals prepared at the centre. Describe the play based activities they will enjoy, including outdoor time, creative experiences, and group activities.

For children attending our kindy and preschool room, mention that they will participate in our school readiness program and might hear stories from our Daily 12 Books literacy program. Knowing what to expect helps children feel more in control and less anxious about the unknown.

Prepare Together the Night Before

The evening before the first day, involve your child in preparing for childcare. Pack their bag together, choosing a comfort item from home if allowed. This might be a small toy, a family photo, or a special blanket. At Foxdale Kindergarten, we understand that these transitional objects help children feel secure as they adjust to their new environment.

Label all belongings clearly with your child’s name. Choose comfortable, practical clothing that allows for messy play and easy toileting. Pack spare clothes, nappies if required, and any comfort items your child might need throughout the day.

Create a Positive Goodbye Routine

How you say goodbye on the first day sets the tone for your child’s experience. Develop a simple, consistent goodbye routine that you can repeat each day. Keep it brief and positive. Tell your child you will return to collect them, and be specific about when that will be, using language they understand such as “after afternoon tea” or “when the sun is setting.”

Our experienced early childhood educators at Foxdale Kindergarten are skilled at supporting children through separation anxiety. Trust that your child is in caring, capable hands. Even if your child becomes upset, our nurturing approach helps children settle quickly once parents have left.

Manage Your Own Emotions

Children are perceptive and often mirror their parents’ emotions. If you appear anxious or upset, your child will likely feel the same way. Approach the first day with confidence and enthusiasm. Remember that at Foxdale Kindergarten, we see every child as a special individual, and our programs are tailored to each child’s particular needs.

It is completely normal to feel emotional about this milestone. Process these feelings with other adults rather than in front of your child. Trust that you have made a positive choice for your child’s development and early education.

Understand the Settling Period

Every child adjusts to childcare at their own pace. Some children settle immediately, while others need several weeks to feel completely comfortable. At Foxdale Kindergarten, we work closely with families to ensure each child’s transition is as smooth as possible. Our small centre size allows our educators to provide individualised attention and support.

Consider starting with shorter days and gradually increasing to full days if possible. This gentle approach can help some children adjust more easily. Communicate with our educators about your child’s progress and any concerns you might have.

Communicate with Educators

Before your child’s first day, share important information about your child with our team. Let us know about their interests, routines, dietary requirements, and any specific needs they might have. At Foxdale Kindergarten, we strive to make each child’s developmental needs central to our daily program planning, and this information helps us provide the best possible care.

Ask questions about our daily routines, communication methods, and what support is available during the settling period. Our team is here to partner with you in supporting your child’s growth and wellbeing.

Celebrate the Milestone

Starting childcare is a significant achievement for your child. Celebrate this new chapter with enthusiasm and pride. Take a photo on the first day, talk positively about their experiences, and acknowledge their bravery in trying something new.

At Foxdale Kindergarten, we are committed to providing a safe, happy, positive environment where children flourish, grow, and explore. Through our play based curriculum, excursions and incursions, and nurturing approach, your child will develop skills, accumulate knowledge, and build confidence throughout their early learning years.
