Daily S.T.E.M.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Integrated into Every Day

Foxdale Kindergarten’s commitment to daily STEM education reflects an understanding that young children are natural scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who learn best through hands-on exploration and inquiry.

Rather than treating STEM as an occasional special activity, these learning experiences are woven into the daily program, making scientific thinking and problem-solving a natural part of children’s everyday play and discovery.

Science

Children engage with the natural world through the centre’s sustainable vegetable garden, where they observe plant life cycles, investigate soil composition, study insects and pollinators, and understand the relationship between sunlight, water and growth.

The aquaponic system provides a living laboratory for understanding ecosystems, fish biology, water cycles, and sustainable food production. Additional science experiences include weather observation, simple experiments with cause and effect, exploration of physical properties (sink/float, magnetic/non-magnetic), and seasonal nature studies.

Technology

Age-appropriate technology experiences help children understand how tools and devices work. This might include simple machines, exploring how everyday items function, and developing digital literacy skills appropriate for their developmental stage.

Engineering

Building and construction activities encourage spatial reasoning and problem-solving. Children design structures with blocks, create ramps and pathways, test stability and balance, and learn through trial and error how to make their creations work. These experiences develop critical thinking and persistence.

Mathematics

Mathematical concepts are embedded throughout the day through counting routines, pattern recognition, shape exploration, measurement activities (cooking, gardening), sorting and classifying objects, and understanding spatial relationships. Children develop number sense and mathematical vocabulary naturally through play-based experiences.

The daily STEM focus, combined with the regular Science Show incursions, creates a culture of curiosity where asking questions, testing ideas, and discovering how things work becomes second nature. This foundation in STEM thinking prepares children not just for school, but for a lifetime of logical reasoning and innovative problem-solving.
